Younger people often learn new technology very quickly. They can master things like the latest smartphones or apps in just a few minutes. Older people may not be as familiar with technology, but many are eager to learn, especially when it involves ordering food. The key to their success usually lies in having a patient teacher. Francesca Rietti stepped in to help her 102-year-old Grandpa George and 89-year-old Grandma Annie when they wanted to learn how to use Uber Eats. She shared their learning experience in a series of heartwarming videos that gained attention online. Rietti mentioned that people connect with her grandparents because they are positive and curious individuals who enjoy learning new things.
In one of her TikTok videos, Rietti started the lesson by saying “Welcome to UberEats 101.” She sat at a desktop computer with her grandparents beside her, showing them how to navigate to Ubereats.com. Rietti explained that she chose to use the desktop because their iPhones were too old for the Uber Eats app, which led to some amusing moments. Grandma Annie had a notebook and pen ready to take notes, and she was engaged, asking plenty of questions. During the lesson, Rietti accidentally touched the screen, not realizing it was a touchscreen, while Grandma Annie already knew that. The grandparents discussed the variety of food options available and decided to explore Morton’s Steakhouse. Rietti guided them through the process of checking delivery times and adding items to their cart, including explaining how tipping works.

In a follow-up video, Grandma Annie attempted to place an order for a steak but had a specific steakhouse in mind. Lighthearted exchanges occurred as they struggled to recall the name of their preferred local restaurant. Rietti later mentioned that the videos had gone viral and shared a third clip showing her grandparents’ excitement about their newfound fame. She described how she called her grandma to share that millions of people enjoyed their videos. Grandma Annie immediately began taking notes on the statistics Rietti shared, eager to update Grandpa George.
Eventually, they all came together to place an order through Uber Eats, with Grandpa George taking the lead. Rietti noted their quick learning skills in the video. As they selected their meals, Grandma Annie expressed her enthusiasm for letting George handle the order. He reviewed the final selections and decided that a 10% tip was appropriate, differing from the typical 20% at a restaurant. Grandma Annie expressed her delight in using Uber Eats, while Rietti indicated that the videos had sparked conversations with Uber about ways to help more senior citizens try the service.
What do you think about this initiative to help seniors learn to use technology?
