Parents and grandparents often have disagreements. These can be about how much screen time kids should have, arguments over sweets, or how frequently grandparents should babysit. Conflict is common, and handling these disagreements in a healthy manner is important for the relationship. One major source of tension is gifts. Many parents dread when grandparents visit with a car filled with presents. It might be toys, furniture, costumes, or decorations. This often happens on ordinary days, but it can be even more overwhelming during holidays. Parents appreciate gifts for their kids but feel it’s just too much, especially when storage space is limited.
DeeDee Moore, a grandmother and the founder of the website More Than Grand, shared on her TikTok in November 2024 that excessive gifting from grandparents is a significant cause of holiday stress for parents. She noted that 75% of parents surveyed by More Than Grand wanted grandparents to consider their wishes regarding gifts. Moore explained that one common reason for this concern is the lack of space to store gifts, which grandparents often overlook.

Moore provided an example to illustrate the situation. If a child has multiple grandparents and relatives, each buying a gift for their birthday, the number can quickly add up. For example, if a child has four grandparents and four aunts and uncles, receiving just one gift from each could mean ten presents. If the grandparents give three gifts each, plus a few extras from aunts, that totals to 22 presents for a child who might be just as happy with a simple box. Including gifts from friends and unexpected items from thrift stores can create a serious storage challenge.
Moore mentioned that gifts should bring joy to both the giver and the receiver. However, during busy times like the holidays, they can become sources of conflict. She encouraged following her account for tips on managing grandparent generosity during these seasons.
The overload of gifts can lead to additional issues. The More Than Grand website listed concerns such as undermining the parents’ values, harming a child’s creativity, promoting overconsumption, and teaching kids to expect gifts instead of nurturing their relationships with their grandparents. Another issue is that excessive gift-giving can overshadow the thoughtful presents parents choose for their children.
For those with a strong desire to give, Moore suggested a helpful solution. She recommended donating some gifts to organizations like Toys for Tots, which assist children in need.
