Influencer Hugh Lovett, who is part of the Australian social media group The Lovetts, is facing backlash after a stunt involving a plane’s safety demonstration. On October 16, during a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Adelaide, Lovett decided to inflate a life jacket while seated next to his brother Blake. This occurred as the pre-recorded safety video warned passengers not to inflate the jacket until exiting the aircraft.

Lovett, wearing the bright yellow vest, pulled the inflation cord, causing it to inflate around him. His brother reacted with disbelief as passengers turned to look at Lovett. Afterward, crew members approached him to ask why he activated the jacket. Lovett then requested help in repacking it and was moved to a different seat with an unused life jacket for the remainder of the flight.

Upon landing, Lovett faced a different situation. He described how he was the last passenger to disembark and was directed by the pilot to approach the front of the plane. He raised his hand upon the pilot’s inquiry and was escorted by officers from the Australian Federal Police at Adelaide Airport. The police spoke to him about the incident and discussed its potential dangers. An official statement from the AFP confirmed they are looking into the matter but did not mention any charges.

Lovett later shared that he received an email informing him of a ban from both Jetstar and Qantas. While details of the ban’s duration remain unclear, a Jetstar representative confirmed the no-fly status, emphasizing that passengers must follow safety instructions and not tamper with safety equipment.

The situation raises questions about the seriousness of airline safety protocols. An inflated life jacket can hinder movement during an emergency, especially in a water landing, where it might lead to tragic outcomes. In a past incident involving Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, passengers who inflated their life jackets inside the cabin faced deadly consequences.

What do you think about Lovett’s actions and the airline’s response?
