Michael Douglas, 82, is taking a step back from the film industry but is not ready to say goodbye. His latest book, “One Helluva Ride,” revisits the movies that defined his career and highlights early challenges that nearly kept him from acting.

Douglas has had a long career filled with iconic roles and critical acclaim. In a recent interview, he mentioned that he is “not very active anymore” in movies but would consider a good project if it came along. He indicated that he would be open to working with a great director and script but is not deeply involved in his career right now.

His recent work includes a role in the 2024 Apple TV miniseries “Franklin,” where he portrayed Benjamin Franklin. He also starred in the Prime Video family drama “Looking Through Water.” Douglas noted that he might have a small role in Oliver Stone’s upcoming film “White Lies,” but emphasized that family is his main focus.

Douglas enjoys planning trips for his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and their children, Dylan and Carys, along with his son Cameron from his previous marriage. He reflected in his memoir that he has not slowed down completely but spends his time differently now. He has traded movie adventures for family adventures, ensuring that they take at least one significant trip each year. He humorously mentioned that his wife calls him the best travel agent, as she captures all their memories.

When asked about retirement, Douglas clarified that he has not officially retired but requires something special to draw him away from his fulfilling life. He expressed that even if he never makes another film, he feels content with his remarkable career.

In his book, he discusses 13 major projects, dedicating a chapter to each, including notable films like “Fatal Attraction,” “Wall Street,” and “Basic Instinct.” He aims to take readers behind the scenes, sharing how these projects came to be and their impact on his life.

However, his path to success was not always smooth. Early in his career, he struggled with severe stage fright, which was worsened by the legacy of his famous father, Kirk Douglas. He shared that he sometimes felt so anxious he would use a wastebasket to cope before performances. His mother and stepfather encouraged him to seek the help of acting coach Wynn Handman, which allowed him to overcome those fears and advance in his career.
