Being in a healthy relationship typically means both people can share their feelings openly. It involves patience, understanding, and calmness. However, some individuals may feel they are “too much” in their relationships. This feeling can cause anxiety and impact trust and growth, whether the relationship is romantic, familial, or platonic. In a recent episode of the Zach Sang Show, motivational expert Mel Robbins discussed why some people experience this sense of being overwhelming. She used an analogy called the “10-gallon people” theory, which she learned from Oprah Winfrey.

Robbins shared that the “10-gallon people” theory has been very enlightening for her. She noted that Oprah learned it from Bishop T.D. Jakes, who helped her understand it in terms of her own relationship with her mother. The theory categorizes people based on their emotional needs: there are “10-gallon people” and “pint people.” Robbins explained that 10-gallon people need a lot of love, attention, excitement, and energy. If a 10-gallon person seeks that much love from someone who can only give a pint’s worth, they might feel unfulfilled.

Robbins identifies as a 10-gallon person and mentions that many people in her life are pint-sized. While those pint-sized individuals may give their all, she finds it insufficient for her needs. She expressed that it is unfortunate because the pint-sized person has contributed everything they can, and there’s nothing wrong with having a smaller capacity.

This difference can lead to feelings of resentment, Robbins noted. A 10-gallon person may feel that the pint-sized person has not provided enough, even though they have given their maximum. She emphasized that it is essential to recognize that being a pint-sized person or a 10-gallon person is not a value judgment; it just is. Awareness of one’s own capacity, shaped by past experiences and current situations, is crucial.

Robbins provided an example of how a 10-gallon person could temporarily become pint-sized due to life events, like a friend dealing with a serious illness. Instead of being critical, she suggests thinking about how to respond supportively. Her “Let Them” theory encourages allowing others to show up as they are and reflecting on how one wishes to respond, such as reaching out to see if everything is okay.

In a September 2026 episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, Oprah elaborated on this theory and connected it to her relationship with her mother. Oprah described herself and many others as 10-gallon people who often try to seek 10 gallons of love from those who can only offer a pint. She highlighted the importance of acknowledging this mismatch and shifting the focus to what the other person can provide, asking whether one can accept them as they are.
