Natalie Portman Recalls the ‘Nerve-Wracking’ Moments Before Her ‘V for Vendetta’ Head-Shaving Scene

Two decades after its release, “V for Vendetta” is returning to theaters. Natalie Portman, known for her role in this 2005 action film, recalled an unforgettable moment when her head was shaved for the scene. She mentioned that it was nerve-wracking to know they had only one chance to film it. Portman noted that she usually has multiple opportunities in filmmaking, but this time, she had to deliver her performance perfectly in one take.

Director James McTeigue reflected on the atmosphere during filming, indicating that it was challenging at times, particularly during the hair-shaving scene. Aware they couldn’t film it again, he used three cameras to capture every angle. McTeigue remembered how Portman felt nervous about the process, underscoring the gravity of the moment.

To help Portman feel more at ease, McTeigue arranged for her personal hairdresser to be present during the scene. “V for Vendetta” is set in a dystopian world and follows Evey, played by Portman, whose life changes after she meets a masked freedom fighter. The film is based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel.

Portman pointed out that the film’s themes remain relevant today due to the ongoing challenges with authoritarian governments. She noted that the story has a historical backdrop, referencing Guy Fawkes, who fought against his government in 1605, as well as the graphic novel’s creation in response to political issues in the 1980s.

Stephen Fry, who portrayed Gordon Deitrich, shared that many people have praised the film’s relevance, reflecting on how society has not adequately addressed its warning. He expressed mixed feelings about the film’s anniversary, feeling proud of the production but disappointed that the issues it highlights persist.

McTeigue echoed this sentiment, suggesting that viewers can see parallels between the film and current political situations. He praised Portman’s performance, stating that her portrayal of Evey added depth to the film’s message and was essential to its impact.

What are your thoughts on the film’s continued relevance today?
