At Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta, Georgia, a surprising friendship has emerged between a young zebra named Kurtsie and a giraffe named Bakari. This bond has captured the attention of park visitors as the theme park marks its 30th anniversary. Kurtsie, born in December 2023, and Bakari, who joined the park in 2018, show how animals from different species can connect. Their friendship began when Bakari expressed curiosity about the newborn zebra, which led to a close relationship that has continued to grow.
Bakari had been introduced to the zebra herd shortly before Kurtsie’s birth, allowing them to share a habitat that promotes interactions among different species. Initially, Bakari was intrigued by the zebras, but his interest deepened when he met Kurtsie. Animal care specialists observed that Bakari would often stay nearby whenever Kurtsie entered his area. As Kurtsie matured, she also sought out Bakari, further strengthening their connection.

Now, visitors can see them together frequently, whether they are grooming each other, resting in the field, or sharing hay in the giraffe barn. Kurtsie even joins Bakari at feeding times and enjoys being close to him. Sometimes, she playfully moves between Bakari’s long legs or nudges him to get his attention. The Giraffe Overlook at the park provides a chance for guests to watch these interactions and learn about the animals’ behaviors and their lives together.
Their friendship has positively impacted both animals. Kurtsie has gained confidence from her time with Bakari, who has become more social and protective. Sarah Plain, an animal care specialist and Bakari’s lead caretaker, noted that Kurtsie’s relaxed demeanor often reflects Bakari’s calmness during their interactions. For the animal care team, this bond serves as an excellent example of how animals can form meaningful connections despite being different species.
The Giraffe Overlook was designed to promote natural behaviors and allow animals to develop social relationships. Caretakers feel rewarded to witness the closeness between Kurtsie and Bakari as an illustration of successful cohabitation. Plain remarked that these interactions show how aware and responsive the animals are to one another, highlighting the genuine bond they share.
