The size of male genitalia has been a topic of discussion for a long time, with studies suggesting that men often overstate their size. A 2023 online survey conducted by Danish researchers indicated that men generally exaggerate their length by about 21%. Experts have noted that the commonly accepted figures for what is considered an “acceptable length” are not entirely backed by scientific evidence.
A medical review published in 2025 analyzed 33 studies and included data from 36,883 patients. It revealed that the average size of a flaccid penis is approximately 3.63 inches in length and 3.58 inches in circumference, while an erect penis measures about 5.45 inches in length and 4.69 inches in girth.

The 2023 Danish survey showed that participants claimed their average size to be around 7.10 inches, which is larger than the national average of 5.85 inches. Some responses were clearly exaggerated, with claims that included unrealistic sizes. Researchers suggested that this tendency to exaggerate may come from the belief that a larger size is associated with greater masculinity.
A psychologist noted that many men believe the average size is significantly larger, often around 6.5 to 7 inches. This belief may stem from societal norms that link penis size to masculinity, self-worth, and the ability to please a partner. The mismatch often arises from unrealistic expectations set by media portrayals and cultural influence.
Research has also suggested that the belief that women prefer larger sizes is a myth. A 2022 survey indicated that the ideal size for achieving climax is around 8 inches, with pleasure decreasing for sizes over 9 inches. Despite this, a 2019 survey found that around 26.4% of men were dissatisfied with their size, and a global survey from 2015 revealed that about 55% felt similarly.
Experts have advised those who struggle with feelings of inadequacy regarding their size to focus on aspects of intimacy that are not related to size. Genuine pleasure in intimacy is rooted in arousal, communication, and emotional connection. It is suggested that individuals should step back from media that could induce body shame and recognize that adult entertainment often highlights performers with extreme characteristics. Focusing on sensory experiences rather than viewing intimacy as a challenge may be beneficial.
