Law enforcement has provided an update on the investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death, which occurred at the age of 36. Sgt. Diana Munoz from the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina informed PEOPLE that the investigation is now complete and deemed her death accidental. Panettiere was found unresponsive on August 16 by her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, at the Airbnb where she was staying. Despite attempts by the brothers and first responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead on the scene.
On September 22, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office revealed that Panettiere died due to the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. Her representatives stated to PEOPLE that recent reports from unnamed sources were unverified and contributed to conflicting information. They emphasized the importance of patience as the investigation was concluded, noting that answers would eventually emerge.

Additionally, it was reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) participated in the investigation and conducted a search for illegal drugs at her home shortly after her death. So far, no charges have been filed against anyone, including Hickerson and his brother, in connection with her death. If you or someone you know is dealing with substance abuse or addiction, you can reach out to SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357), which is free and available 24/7.
