Stevie Nicks Looks Back on the Uncertain Moment That Inspired 'Landslide'

Stevie Nicks recently shared the story behind her song “Landslide,” which is one of her most famous works. At the City of Hope Spirit of Life Gala on October 27, she explained how the song came to be while she played it for the audience. Nicks revealed that she was in a snowy house in Aspen, Colorado, contemplating whether to continue her partnership with Lindsey Buckingham, her bandmate in Fleetwood Mac. She reflected on how long ago that moment was and noted that they are still making music together.

Nicks described the setting, saying she was looking out at the beautiful snow-covered hills while everyone else was out for dinner. She mentioned that her financial situation motivated her to write a great song while enjoying the view. During that time, she had her Goya guitar with her, which she admitted she could barely play, but she decided to give it a try and wrote “Landslide.”

Nicks and Buckingham’s connection started long before they joined Fleetwood Mac. In a conversation with the Song Exploder podcast, Nicks recalled their first meeting at a party in San Francisco where she performed “California Dreamin'” with Buckingham but left without introducing herself. Two years later, they became part of a band called Fritz, where Nicks took over for the original singer. As the band grew in popularity, record labels showed interest in Nicks and Buckingham but not the rest of the group. This situation led them to pursue music on their own.

The pair began a romantic relationship in 1972, and a year later, they released an album titled “Buckingham Nicks,” which did not do well. This left them without a record label and uncertain about their future. However, while recording at Sound City studio in Los Angeles, Buckingham encountered Mick Fleetwood listening to their song “Frozen Love.” Fleetwood invited Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac, and he ensured that Nicks would also be included in the band. In 1975, “Landslide” appeared on Fleetwood Mac’s album and became a significant part of Nicks’ legacy.

In the following year, as Fleetwood Mac worked on their famous album “Rumours,” Nicks and Buckingham’s romantic relationship came to an end. Nicks described their relationship as complicated but also fantastic. Despite their ups and downs, they have remained on good terms. In August, Buckingham mentioned in an interview with E! News that he and Nicks have been in regular contact, suggesting that working on a Fleetwood Mac documentary helped them reconnect.
