A Texas man and woman noticed a bag full of cash on top of an ATM while they were making a stop. The man, who did not want to be named, quickly contacted the Lewisville Police Department after seeing the money. He found a note on one of the bags suggesting it might belong to the nearby Chick-fil-A. When he asked the restaurant’s supervisor, he was told that the money and a smaller bag with 19 checks were not theirs. By that time, an officer had arrived, and the man, a barber from Lewisville, willingly handed over the bag.
Investigators later found that the cash and checks were property of Bank of America. They learned that a Brinks technician was supposed to deliver the cash after fixing the ATM. Inside the bag, a receipt showed that the amount was $128,514. At the police station, Lewisville Police Chief Brook Rollins said they needed to double-check the amount according to their protocol, which included using an electric currency counter. After counting, they confirmed the total was indeed $128,514, with not a cent missing.

Lewisville Police Detective Gina Miller shared with CBS Texas that while she has seen cases where people turned in lost items like wallets and IDs, she had never encountered someone returning this much money before. Miller noted that the bag appeared to have been left there by accident, with no signs of a crime. The Brinks technician seemed to have carelessly placed the bag on the ATM, similar to how someone might leave a coffee cup on a car roof.
Bank of America has successfully reclaimed the cash and checks. The Lewisville Police Department expressed a desire to honor the Good Samaritan. Miller mentioned that while many might think about keeping such a large amount of money, the saying “Finders keepers, losers weepers” is not a legal excuse if caught. Police Chief Rollins praised the man for knowing the right thing to do and acting without delay. What do you think about his decision to return the money?
