Unusual Rescue Involves Divers Aiding Kangaroo Stranded Over a Mile from Shore

In an unusual incident, a scuba diver and his crew rescued a kangaroo that was found more than one and a half miles offshore in Boston Bay, South Australia. The captain first spotted the kangaroo in the water, and it seemed that the young kangaroo recognized that its only chance for survival was to get onboard the boat. The calm sea allowed the crew to lower the vessel’s water door, bringing it close to the gentle waves. The kangaroo was so exhausted that diver Jake Murray could easily lift it out of the water.

Murray explained that the rescue began when skipper Ryan Smith noticed the animal. At first, the crew found it hard to believe they were actually seeing a kangaroo in the water. As an experienced farmer, Murray was careful while handling the kangaroo, ensuring a gentle grip on its strong legs. Eventually, the kangaroo relaxed and even fell asleep in his arms.

Another diver, Miguel Villarroel from Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, asked if such rescues happened often, and Murray responded that he had never seen anything like it before. When discussing how the kangaroo ended up three kilometers from shore, Murray humorously suggested it might have been a wild night out.

Kangaroos typically stay close to the beach, but there have been previous instances of them needing rescue from the water. In 2022, a 17-year-old lifeguard from New South Wales rescued a kangaroo that had been pushed into the ocean by strong waves. Despite not knowing exactly what to do, she managed to keep the kangaroo’s head above water with a rescue board and brought it back to shore.
