Panicked emergency calls captured the chaotic moments following an incident in which a University of Georgia student fell from an eighth-floor apartment window. Kristin Sargent fell onto the pool area at the Rambler Athens building in Athens, Georgia, on September 26. 911 calls revealed confusion as friends and residents tried to relay what occurred.
One of the callers, a friend who was with Sargent, reported that they were dancing when Sargent unexpectedly fell from the window. She described her friend as not moving, expressing shock at the scene below. The caller mentioned that they had been drinking but quickly emphasized they were not heavily intoxicated. They were celebrating a recent Georgia Bulldogs football victory over the Oklahoma Sooners.

Another resident, who was staying on the fifth floor, made a separate call after witnessing the fall. He told the dispatcher that he saw someone fall from the eighth-floor window and land by the pool. He noted that the person appeared unconscious and expressed concern over the situation.
Emergency services arrived at around 7:37 p.m. After evaluating the scene, officers found Sargent near the pool area, showing signs of a significant impact. Officer Erik Ellison reported that witnesses indicated Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress by an open window when she fell through the screen. Instead of landing directly on the ground, Sargent fell onto the second-floor courtyard.
Investigations suggested that Sargent may have struck a metal bench during her fall, as there was blood on the bench cushion and damage to part of the armrest. Witnesses also noted that a lounge chair might have softened her landing, although it remains unclear how much these items aided her survival.
Sargent was taken to the hospital, where investigators spoke with her and witnesses. Police did not find any evidence to suggest that her fall was intentional or caused by someone else. Ellison’s report indicated that the information gathered pointed to the incident being an accident. Forensic teams continued to examine the scene as the investigation proceeded.
The accident took place at the Rambler Athens, a student housing complex located near the University of Georgia. Reports identified Sargent as a senior majoring in finance and marketing. While initial calls expressed concern that Sargent was unconscious, her father later shared with Channel 2 Action News that she was awake and talking.
