Grieving Parents Urge Court to Impose 'Minimum Sentence' on Driver Who Took Their Son's Life

The parents of a 4-year-old boy who died after a car hit their shopping cart in a parking lot have asked the court for the lightest sentence possible for the driver. The driver, an 80-year-old woman, pleaded guilty to culpable driving and negligence resulting in the death of a pedestrian. In Australia, this felony typically carries a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years, which could be a significant portion of her life. However, the parents have shown remarkable courage by choosing forgiveness as a way to cope with their loss. They expressed a desire for the driver to be able to spend time with her family.

The incident involved Maureen Brew, who accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while parked. She had mistakenly believed her car was in park while she looked for something in the glove box. The car rolled forward and hit Osal Pokhrel, who was in the shopping cart. Sadly, he died a few hours later at the hospital.

In their victim impact statement, the parents shared the deep pain they feel daily, stating that four years of life for their son was not enough. They emphasized that he was loved and is greatly missed. Brew’s statement, submitted by her lawyers, conveyed her deep remorse and guilt for her actions. She also expressed gratitude that the parents do not hold any anger toward her.

Justice Belinda Baker, who is overseeing the case, noted she would take the victim impact statement into careful consideration when determining the sentence, which will be announced later. How do you feel about the parents’ decision to seek a lighter sentence for the driver?
